#MusicReview: Caro – Starboy ft Wizkid &L.A.X.

As I write this review I’m currently listening to the song and literally dancing to it – even though I’m doing the big man dance (sitting down, nodding my head and tapping my feet, lol).

Wizkid is without any doubt one of the best things that has happened to the Nigerian music industry, and even though his story can’t exactly be tagged as from “grass to grace,” since he was quite comfortable before “blowing,” I can still say his growth in the industry has been massive.

Just like almost every popular artiste in Nigeria, Wizkid also claims to be a singer from childhood – mtchew, I wonder why they all lie, and although its not confirmed yet, there is a probability he had been in a choir too, lol… Just an assumption.

The first time I heard Wizkid on a track was when he was featured in Nigeria’s self acclaimed “African Rapper Number One” in person of Mr Incredible (MI) on the track: “Fast Money, Fast Cars.” In my opinion, Wizkid killed the chorus and did a great job. But his ticket to limelight came when he dropped the hit-single – “Holla Your Boy.”

“Holla Your Boy” placed Wizkid on a first class plane to stardom as the song became a national anthem and also led to him being compared to Justin Bieber who also stepped into stardom same year, but I think the difference in their success is clear, and *in Wizkid’s voice* “my money and your money, no be mate.” I let you ponder on what I mean by that, lol.

Anyway, enough of the biography and boring history lecture, let’s talk about “Caro.”

Just like most pop songs, Caro is fun to listen to and easy to dance to, that is if you can actually dance though. But I have a lot of reservations concerning the song.

Firstly, while I wrote the lyrics, I patiently waited for the chorus or hook which I didn’t hear eventually, I mean, which song doesn’t have a chorus or hook??? Its just so unprofessional in my opinion and later, they would ask why Nigerian songs don’t win grammy awards … *SMH*.

Secondly, what the fucck was L.A.X doing on the track? Caro is the first song I’ve heard L.A.X voice on and even though he tried a little, he just didn’t try enough. I expected him to grab the opportunity with both hands and kill the track to the best of his ability, but all we got was just a boring verse from him… He just didn’t perform as I had expected.

Thirdly, can someone tell my why Wizkid keeps on repeating same thing in almost all his songs? I listen to a lot of pop songs and even though other singers repeat at times, Wizkid repetition is on a whole different level. Dear Wizkid, please try to actually sing something in your tracks and stop repeating, its annoying.

Fourthly, I think Wizkid was high on weed when he recording this track because he ended up confusing the few amount of us who actually listen to his lyrics. How you may want to ask? Okay, let me break it down for you guys and bring out some excerpts from the lyrics. At first, Wizkid was like: “Caro dey make my head dey turn/ Caro dey make my head dey bang/ Caro dey make my head dey scatter,” any sane person would know from this few lines above that Wizkid has seen the “Caro” chick in question, because how would someone who you haven’t seen make your head to turn and make your head scatter.
Okay, now let me quote another excerpt from the same song: “But I’m still looking for Caro…ehba/ Show me Caro…ehba/ Sisi Caro…ehba/ Where are you Caro…ehba,” in the first quote, Wizkid made us believe that he had seen “Caro,” but few seconds later, he says he is looking for Caro. So am I blind, stupid or is Wizkid just a confused niccur? He did something similar in “Zombie,” but that’s another story for another day.

And finally, I don’t mean to be a hater but I’m sure you would agree with me that if this same song was sung by an up coming artiste, only the artist family and neighbour would listen to the song… The only reason the song blew was because of the artiste who sang it is already a star. A female friend of mine once said that even if Wizkid just coughs on a track, she would listen to it… Lol, yea, I agree it funny but she really said it and I can give you her number to call and ask, just comment and ask me for it *wink* (she is a fine girl o).

Oya! Enough of the reservations, let’s talk about the good side before some hardcore Wizkid fans crucify me. Please don’t get me wrong, I’m a Wizkid fan too just like you all but I’m also a sucker for good music and I say the truth when I see it.

I don’t have much good to say about this song because I’ve already said almost all the good things there is to say, but let me just add a few things:

Firstly, the instrumentals for Caro is crazy! And I so much love it. Legendary beats did an awesome job in the mix. I downloaded the instrumentals recently and even without hearing Wizkid’s voice on the track, I felt the urge to stand up and move my body to it, I think a saxophone was played in the background and that a rare but nice instrument to use in pop songs instruments, kudos to legendary beats.

Secondly, the Video of Caro is off the hook. The video was directed by Moe Musa, and after watching the video, I feel that’s what made Davido to shoot a second video for “Skelewu” and made sure it was directed by Moe Musa too. The two models used in the videos were definitely two of the hottest models I’ve seen in a long while if only I could just get one of them phone number to keep me company *sobs*

WIZKID and ONE OF THE MODELS… The cuter one *wink*

Okay! That’s all I have to say for now. If you want to download the audio, you can CLICK HERE! to download it, or CLICK HERE! to download the video from Naijaloaded.com, and just in case you can’t hear the song clearly enough, the complete lyrics is just below this paragraph.

  1. Nice review by a yaba left patient. Musicians and writers don’t look from the same point of view, I guess that why wizkid was stil looking for Caro after he had described her to us.

It’s funny though cause nigerian music is full of repitation. imagine wizkid mentioning caro more than 80times in one song.

I love nigerian song cause it’s danceable but meaningless, who give a fuQ anyways? when i want to listen to good music i know the kindof artiste i can look upto.

And yes “Zombie” by Wizkid was plain Rubbish, there was a part where Wizkid made a mistake by saying “i’ll always do you wrong, i’ll never treat you right” instead of saying “ill always do you right, i’ll never do you wrong” little wonder the song wasen’t popular unlike others. Atfirst when i heard that line i was like WTF! what was the producer thinking, did they even edited the song? Anyways your guess is as good as mine.

    1. You just hit the nail on the head. I wanted to talk alittle about Zombie but I figured it was a whole new story on its own so I cut out that part.

Nigerian songs are just prone to repetition, only a few artistes actually sing, and it quite annoying, but what can we do?… Nothing! So pathetic.
